Pictures for Research Group

Evan (and myself) were fortunate enough to be part of the Intergrowth 21st Study to get a better understanding of the progress of the baby in the womb.http://www.medscinet.net/intergrowth/default.aspx

Here are some pictures with a shirt they gave us! Oxford class of 2011 :)

Thoughts from Dad

Aaah, I guess it's time to formulate some thoughts about Evan. Not that it's a chore, but it's bizarre how different things are the second time around.

Everything is different. Of course our lives keep moving so when Ella was born Liz was being a home mom and dad was a MBA student. Now we were looking at lead game designer and a CEO respectively. Bit different levels of responsibility (and on a positive note, income). Then add to that the fact that the first and second births bore next to no resemblance to each other.

In the first Liz was in labor for 18 hours, Ella came out with a conehead courtesy of forceps and they scared the shit out of us when I smartly went and asked for full disclosure. Oh well, she's turning out great so that's fine enough.

With Evan we're a massive 30 minutes in labor and everything goes smoothly with Evan having a nice round head and no sign of trouble. It started off as quite a disgusting ordeal to observe with the doctor tugging Liz's stomach this way and that, but she was happily oblivious while we chatted about this, that and the other. Once the bleeding got stopped everything got quite fascinating actually. Really makes one think about the human body as a machine and makes me wonder how you can retain your awe of the thing as a doctor.

Anyway, back to Evan. He comes out, everything completely peachy. Almost boring I might say, with Evan being extremely pleasant from the start. After a few hours with Liz obviously fine and Evan just dozing, I figure we could get something more exciting going and head out to get Ella to see how she'll take to her new younger brother. The fact that I could actually do just a few hours after birth says everything about the differences between the births.

Evan is pretty mellow. As in, extremely mellow. I'm not quite sure how to take that, as it means that he just kind of sits there and yearns for what only mommy can give pretty much 100% of the time that he's awake. Pretty boring in a way, though of course quite easy as well. What's interesting is the eyes though. I still remember when Ella first made eye contact with me (about day 5 in the hospital) and smiled at me (on a flight from Phoenix to San Francisco of all things). Evan was off to the races making eye contact on day 2, and generally peering around in a somewhat unnervingly intelligent way at times. In general I get the impression that he isn't very impressed with what he's seen so far, with the notable exception to that being dear mummy's huge boobs.

I'm also exposed to the 'oh it just looks like you' drivel that I got with Ella. Ella and Evan look nothing alike, and I have now heard comments both that Evan looks just like Liz, just like me and totally not like me. Pretty sure people have no idea what they're talking about with this sort of stuff.

Anyway, I think Evan did the third thing besides sleeping and eating, and I think I need to go clean it up.
